KS4 Physical Education

In Year 10, pupils study a broad range of topics within the key concepts of:

  • competence,
  • performance,
  • creativity and
  • healthy active lifestyles.

They are also encouraged to develop their sports leadership skills.

Activities studied include at least four of the following:

  • outwitting opponents in games (e.g. Netball, Football, Rounders & Volleyball);
  • accurate replication of actions in gymnastics (including trampolining);
  • exploring and communicating ideas in dance;
  • performing at maximum levels in athletics;
  • solving problems / challenges in swimming, lifesaving & outdoor activities
  • exercising safely and effectively to improve health, wellbeing and fitness.

Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership
Students will be offered the opportunity to gain a qualification in Sports Leadership during their PE lessons. The qualification is a nationally recognised accreditation comprising both theoretical and practical components. Students will be assessed on a range of skills and lead a variety of activities with pupils from local primary schools, including:

  • Plan, lead and review a sport/activity
  • Developing leadership skills
  • Lead activities that promote a healthy lifestyle
  • Fair play in sport
  • The role of the official
  • Opportunities in sport and recreation

Duke of Edinburgh Award
Students will also be offered the chance to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which gives all young people the chance to develop skills for work and life, fulfil their potential and have a brighter future. The award includes a personal programme of activities in at least four sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition and Residential (Gold Award only). Students will help people in the community, get fitter, develop skills, take part in an expedition and complete in a residential activity (Gold only). The award allows you to develop new skills and confidence and is highly regarded by employers, colleges and universities.

Post 16 progression
The BTEC Sport Level 2 is required for students who intend to study Sport / Physical Education at BTEC Level 3 and is accepted for entry to some A-level courses.

Career Options
BTEC Sport is highly recommended for students who want to pursue careers in the sports industry e.g. personal trainer, PE teacher, sports coach, swimming teacher or ski instructor.
