BTEC Sport

Since the London 2012 Olympics, the sport, leisure and fitness industries have grown substantially and as a result, BTEC Level 2 First award in Sport is becoming an increasingly popular BTEC courses.

Course Outline

The course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for success in future employment in sports and related industries. You learn by completing assessments (internal and external) based on a variety of situations and activities within a sporting context.

This two year vocational course covers a range of units relating to sport. You will learn about the human body and how it responds to exercise and training; fitness testing and training methods, practical sports performance and dealing with risk assessment and injuries sustained in sport.


Skills required:

  • 100% participation in PE lessons
  • Attendance at least one PE club / sport outside of school
  • Positive attitude towards PE / sport
  • Ability to communicate and work well as a team member / leader
  • Motivation, enthusiasm and confidence



BTEC Level 2 First award in Sport requires studying two core units, two specialist units (see table). On successful completion of the course, students achieve a pass, merit or distinction.

  • Internal Assessment: completion of coursework assignments
  • External Assessment: Onscreen test with multiple choice / short answer questions and matching exercises, etc.

Post 16 progression

Successful completion of the course provides the knowledge, understanding and skills for students to progress to other level 2 vocational qualifications, level 3 vocational qualifications, such as BTEC Level 3 in Sport / Sport and Exercise and possibly academic qualifications, such as GCE AS / A-level in Physical Education.


Possible careers / employment pathways

This vocational qualification will help to prepare you for a range of careers in the growing sports industry including sports coaching, leisure centre management and a range of other roles in the sport and leisure industry.
