Mount Carmel - College for Girls

Art Key Stage 3

At Mount Carmel we believe that everyone can achieve success in Art because Art skills and techniques can be taught and learnt!

The Art Department offers students opportunities to explore and develop their own ideas; to learn about different artists from a range of time periods and cultures; to experiment with a range of fine art materials and processes; and to create personal responses to themes.

Curriculum

YEAR 7 - For the first part of Year 7 the focus is on the ‘key skills’; for example how to draw from observation using a range of mark-making and tonal techniques; how to mix and apply paint, how to draw using perspective and a range of other key skills and techniques. Students study the work of a range of artists and will explore and develop their own ideas to create drawings and paintings which demonstrate all the skills and techniques they have learnt.

YEAR 8 - For the first part of Year 8 the focus is on Sculpture. Students study the work of a range of sculptors and create their own sculpture based on the theme set by their art teacher. The second part of the year will be spent studying a second art movement; the focus will be on figure drawing.

YEAR 9 - For the first part of Year 9 the focus is on Portraiture. Students study the work of a range of artists and create their own self-portrait paintings and drawings. The second part of the year will be spent studying a specific individual artist and printmaking techniques.

Homework

Homework is set on alternate lessons so the books can be collected and marked regularly. Tasks range from drawing and shading objects to designing and researching ideas or creating a collage. National Curriculum levels are given for homework and the teacher writes a comment and a target which helps you to further improve your work.

Curriculum Enrichment

Art Club, once a week after college is very popular and regularly attended. Students can use this time to enter art competitions, experiment with different materials, practise techniques and finish class or homework.

The Art Department arranges trips to art galleries and museums which relate to the projects being covered.
