Royal Holloway University

In 2012 a group of ten Year 10 students from Mount Carmel accompanied by Mr Rauf and Mrs McKenzie attended a conference titled “Exploring Maths” at the Royal Holloway University in Surrey.

The students were so enthusiastic that they turned up at school early morning for a 7.30am start! The aim of the conference was to develop student interest in Mathematics who wish to study mathematics at A-Level or at University.

These students had the opportunity to be taught by several Mathematics professors from the Royal Holloway University on topics such as Ways to win Maths games and Cryptography. Plus students and professors got to discuss “How is Doing Mathematics in 21st Century Different from that in “The good old days"?”

This conference presented the practical aspects and the implementation of everyday Maths that our students study in their lessons. It was a very enjoyable and educational experience for all involved.

International Partnerships

Global dimension is a National Curriculum concept aimed at developing student awareness of the wider world and the global issues.

Through international projects and partnerships with other schools abroad, students learn to not only communicate with other cultures or learn new languages but they are able to reflect on their own identity and their place in an ever changing world.

As a result of our work on Global Dimension and internationalism, the school has gained the very prestigious International School Award.

The college is working on a joint project as part of the new Global School Partnership. The college has been partnered with ‘Sowa Din Junior High School’ in Accra, Ghana.

Sowa Din have recently sent a parcel of beautiful hand dyed batik fabric and jewellery items made by students.  The college will be displaying these alongside products ones made by our students. The college has sent back work done by our students which includes screen printed bags and accessories our students made at Central Saint Martin’s.

Ms Arbuckle has also been granted the opportunity to go over to Ghana with teachers from other Islington Schools during the Easter holidays. This fantastic opportunity will be a chance to both experience school life in a developing country and also to set up a joint project that hopefully Mount Carmel students can get involved in. A short film involving Year 7 students will be shown to students in Ghana.
